Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Rising dramatically 200 meters above the surrounding jungle, Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark and a must-visit destination for any traveler.

History

Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, Sigiriya served as both a royal palace and fortress. The rock was chosen for its strategic defensive position, and the king created an elaborate complex with gardens, pools, and the famous frescoes.

What to See

The Frescoes

Halfway up the rock, you'll find ancient paintings of celestial maidens. These 1,500-year-old artworks are remarkably well-preserved and showcase the artistic sophistication of ancient Sri Lanka.

Mirror Wall

Originally polished to a mirror finish, this wall still bears ancient graffiti—some dating back to the 8th century—praising the beauty of the frescoes.

Lion's Gate

The massive lion paws at the entrance to the final ascent are all that remain of a giant lion sculpture that once guarded the summit.

Summit Palace

At the top, explore the ruins of the royal palace complex, including the throne platform and bathing pools, while enjoying 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.
