Kandy

Hill Country, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's cultural capital and home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic. A UNESCO World Heritage city surrounded by hills, tea plantations, and rich Buddhist heritage.

Kandy

Kandy is the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, a city steeped in history and spirituality. As the last capital of the ancient kings and home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, it holds immense significance for Buddhists worldwide.

Temple of the Tooth Relic

The Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) houses what is believed to be a tooth of Lord Buddha himself. This sacred relic makes Kandy one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Buddhist world.

Puja Ceremonies

Daily ceremonies are held at 5:30 AM, 9:30 AM, and 6:30 PM. The evening puja is particularly atmospheric with drums, chanting, and the opening of the relic chamber.

Dress Code

Visitors must dress modestly—cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering.

Kandy Lake

This beautiful artificial lake in the heart of the city was created by the last king of Kandy. Take a peaceful walk around its shores or simply enjoy the views from one of the lakeside cafes.

Royal Botanical Gardens

Located at Peradeniya, about 6km from Kandy, these 60-hectare gardens are among the finest in Asia. Highlights include:

  • Giant Javan fig trees
  • Orchid house
  • Spice garden
  • Avenue of royal palms

Kandyan Dance Performances

Don't miss the traditional Kandyan dance shows held every evening. These performances showcase the island's cultural heritage through elaborate costumes and rhythmic drumming.

Esala Perahera Festival
