Keep Your Home Number in Sri Lanka: Dual SIM with a Travel eSIM
Use a travel eSIM for data while your home SIM stays on for SMS codes and calls. Here is the exact dual-SIM setup for iPhone and Android, and how to avoid roaming charges.
Worried you'll lose your number when you swap to a travel SIM? With an eSIM you don't have to. Your home SIM stays in the phone, and the eSIM handles data.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. It works alongside your physical SIM, so your phone runs two lines at once. That is called Dual SIM. One line is your home number, the other is your Sri Lanka data plan.
Why Keep Your Home Number?
- Bank and login codes often arrive by SMS
- Two-factor authentication for email and apps
- Calls from family to your usual number
- Not handing over a passport for a local SIM at the airport
The Ideal Setup
- Home SIM: on for calls and SMS, Data Roaming off
- Travel eSIM: your Mobile Data line, Data Roaming on
- Wi-Fi calling or WhatsApp for calls home
iPhone Setup
- Install the eSIM and label it, for example "Sri Lanka" and "Home".
- Open Settings > Mobile Service.
- Under Mobile Data, choose the Sri Lanka eSIM.
- Tap your Home line and switch Data Roaming off.
- Tap the Sri Lanka line and switch Data Roaming on.
Android Setup
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Set Mobile data to the travel eSIM.
- Open your home SIM and turn Roaming off.
- Open the travel eSIM and turn Roaming on.
Menu names vary slightly by brand. Search "SIM" in Settings if you can't find them.
Will My Home Carrier Charge Me?
Incoming SMS codes are usually free, but check your carrier. Calls and texts may incur roaming fees on some plans. To be safe, keep Data Roaming off for the home line, and ask your carrier about SMS and call rates abroad.
Calls Home Without Roaming
Use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or Messenger over your eSIM data. A voice call uses about 30-40 MB per hour, so it costs very little data.
Does the Travel eSIM Have a Phone Number?
Most data-only eSIMs don't. Airalo plans include minutes and SMS, if you want a local number. See the provider comparison.
Check These First
- Phone is eSIM-compatible: see the device guide
- Phone is unlocked
- Both SIMs show a signal
